Comparative Study
On Dubbing Planned
The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) plans to conduct research on the situation of Iran’s dubbing industry in comparison with other countries.
“We are comparing the dubbing industry in Iran with Italy, Germany, France, Turkey and Russia during the project,“ the director of IRIB dubbing affairs Hossein Bozorgi told ISNA.
The project is a time-consuming but necessary task to evaluate the situation of Iran in comparison with these countries, which have been chosen for specific reasons, he added.
“In France, five translators work on a piece of text concurrently but in Iran we face problems to fund one professional translator to work on a classic text or a documentary filled with technical jargon,“ he said.
About 100 translators are working at the IRIB dubbing center which now is considered one of the prominent capabilities of the center, he added.
In the dubbing project, the role of translation is always downplayed in Iran but it is an important issue for a successful production, he said.
He went on to say that for technical terms, the IRIB dubbers always consult with experts but they are not always available at the center.
Some dubbing directors have difficulty writing dialogue but if translators work on the films in a scenic method, there are usually no problems, he said.
Sometimes two or three translators work on different parts of a single film but this does not lead to a harmonized text and should be revised, he added.

Clooney in Venice for ’Goats’
George Clooney is appearing at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of his new movie, a comic tale of “psychic warfare“ by the US military.
’The Men Who Stare at Goats’, directed by Grant Heslov, is being shown out of competition in Venice on Tuesday, AP reported.
Clooney arrived in Venice by speedboat on Monday night, with Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis in tow. The two, who have been seen together recently, are expected to walk the red carpet Tuesday evening.
Clooney, who owns a villa on Lake Como and spends time in Italy, is a frequent guest at the festival.
The movie co-stars Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. It tells the story of a special US army unit experimenting with paranormal powers in warfare.
Florence, Machine Lead Mercury Prize Race
British singer-songwriters Florence and the Machine and Bat for Lashes are among the front-runners competing on Tuesday for the Mercury Prize, one of Britain’s most prestigious annual music awards.
The bookmakers’ favorite in a field dominated by the debut albums of emerging acts is Florence and the Machine, the recording name for Florence Welch performing both alone and with a changing line-up of musicians.
Known for her explosive live performances, Welch has been described as a cross between Bjork and Kate Bush, with elements of Nick Cave, Kirsty MacColl and Chrissie Hynde, Reuters reported.
According to Welch, her nominated debut album ’Lungs’ is about love and pain and is made up of “harps, choirs, drums, elevator shafts, bits of metal, love, death, fireworks, string quartets ... wedding dresses.“
Bookmakers Ladbrokes have cut the odds on Welch’s acclaimed album winning the 20,000-pound ($32,810) prize from 50-1 in January to 5-2 after it attracted double the bets of its nearest challenger.
“The prize has earned a reputation as the graveyard of the favorites and we hope the trend continues,“ said Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg.

US Reporter Wins Gucci Award
US journalist Mark Boal won this year’s Gucci Group award for his screenplay of ’The Hurt Locker’, a powerful 2008 movie about US soldiers in Iraq.
The film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is based on Boal’s reporting in 2004 as an embedded journalist with a bomb disposal squad in Baghdad, Reuters said.
As the squad takes risks beyond the call of duty, the film explores soldiers’ addiction to danger in a time when most armies are full of volunteers rather than draftees.
“The movie means a world to me, and hopefully it can show people an unseen side of the war,“ Boal said receiving the award, handed out on the sidelines of the Venice film festival.
Since 2006, the Gucci Group award honors artists who have made a remarkable contribution to a film in the previous 18 months.
